Week 4

This week, we decided to go in a different direction for our kite design. We struggled with designing a small kite that actually functioned properly. The new kite design is much larger than our original plan. The new kite design glided but not very smoothly. We discussed it and decided that one solution could be to add strings to the front and back of the kite. Once we did this, the kite began to nose dive. To fix this, we added weight to the back of the kite. It was noted that it is not common for indoor kites to nose dive so we may need to really think about improving our design.

All in all, we were quite happy with the improvements we made this week. We saw a lot of improvement from our first kite design, however, we still need to make major improvements. The kite is still not gliding 100% the way we want it to but we know we are heading in the right direction. Next week, we plan on focusing on how to get the kite to glide better and improve its appearance. We still want to focus on marketing this kite to kites but it will no longer be small.

  1. kiters (and fishermen) prefer "line" over "string"

kites that nose-dive are not unusual - it usually means that there is too much weight towards the front of the kite (or that the wing is not producing enough lift. As you improve your design, (to improve the gliding characteristics), the tendency to nose-dive will probably decrease.
